The Nature of Living
*In memory of Kathee Irene Toon (1950 — 2010)*
With the brief of this project set out to create generative visuals through experimental interfaces built in Max/MSP/Jitter using infared camera inputs. Taking inspiration from notions of visual music and synaesthesia, various options were explored for using motion data to create responses projected in space. The Nature of Living’s interaction design explicitly corresponds to the movements of a user, instead of provoking the user with ambiguous visuals. The final result took the form of a pseudo-fluid object, which used an anaglyphic effect to visually represent the frequency of recorded movements.
This project was featured in *New Zealand Pro Design Issue 111*, as well as in the 2012 Prospectus Handbook for Victoria University of Wellington’s Faculty of Architecture and Design.
